There are a myriad of website builders online that enable you to
create a company website in no time. Many of these offerings cost money
but fortunately, you can use everyone's favorite search engine giant to
create a site for free. Google Sites promises to make the creation and
sharing of a website easy with single click page creation, numerous
templates and up to 10GB of storage. Below is a quick guide to building a
website with Google Sites.
Baby Steps
Go to sites.google.com and log in using your Google account. Click on Create New Site and fill in the details. You will be asked to enter your site's name, a site description, check a box asking if you are featuring mature content and a site theme. There are around 20 pre-defined themes to choose from. Although the site description page is optional, you are advised to fill it out to give visitors a better idea of what the site offers.
Page Layout
You have control of the following six sections:
Menu
Menu options include create page, edit page and More Actions. The create page option obviously allows you to develop pages of content. There are other methods of creating pages but this is the easiest. The edit toolbar is easy to use and allows you to swiftly add or delete content as you deem necessary. More Actions brings you to the additional Google Sites options which includes revision history, page settings and delete. This is the heartbeat of your site so approach with caution! Here is where you add or delete text, photos and images as well as adding methods of advertising in a bid to monetize the site.
Extras
You can create a website easily from scratch using Google Sites without having to pay a penny and you receive 100MB of space for your site. Google Apps Standard Edition will set you back $10 a year because you need a domain in order to use it. Premier Edition is $50 a year and offers 10GB plus 500MB per user account. If your goal is simply to create a website, Google Sites on its own is more than enough. You can use it as a trial run if you wish and discover more about the art of creating a website before attempting to build a more professional site in the future.

You have control of the following six sections:
- Header: This consists of the site name by default which should be removed. You should add a custom header and background.
- Sidebar: There is also a default setting here that needs to be deleted. You can modify the sidebar by adding text, recent activity, AdSense and a countdown.
- Content: You can use the 'what you see is what you get' (WYSIWYG) editor to create site content. You don't need to know anything about programming language in order to successfully add content.
- Attachments: Use this to add files quickly and easily.
- Comments: This is self-explanatory. This feature can be disabled by going to 'More Actions' and selecting 'Page Settings'.
- Footer: You can't edit this section which provides links to the Terms of Service and Report Abuse pages.
