How to Set Up Your BlackBerry

Need to set up a new Blackberry? Learn how to set up your BlackBerry with this quick and easy guide. All you need is a little bit of time and some patience.

A BlackBerry is a little more in depth that most iPhones or Android phones and has a number of extra features like the Trackpad, Menu key and Escape key, but these are easy to use once you get the hang of them, especially the Trackpad, which acts like a mini computer mouse to speed up navigation.
Setting Up Your Contacts

It's easy to move your contacts from your SIM card to your BlackBerry's internal memory and it will also pass this information into your applications.

Put your SIM card into your BlackBerry, press the BlackBerry key and select Open Tray.
Next you need to navigation to Set-Up and select SIM Contacts Sync. Press 'Yes' and you're done.
Meanwhile, if you have your contacts on a PC or Mac you can sync them across to your BlackBerry using BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed on your computer, which is equally straightforward.
Setting Up Your Wi-Fi

You can get a 3G roaming internet data allowance as part of your contract so that once you're connected to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), you can get email and mobile internet access wherever you are.

But whether you have 3G or not, you can still connect your BlackBerry to a secure wireless network and enjoy online content at no extra charge.

To join a network, simply tap or click at the top of the screen where the clock is and tick the box on the Wi-Fi line to turn on. Next, scroll down and tap on Wi-Fi Network, select the network name and enter the password when prompted. Once you see the tick, you know you're connected. Hit the Escape button to head back the home screen and you're done!

Setting Up Your Email
First, you need to create a BlackBerry ID. You can do this by visiting the BlackBerry website.
Once you have one, you can start setting up your email from the home screen by pressing the BlackBerry key and selecting Open Tray. Navigate to Set UP and press Email Accounts.

Now select the option to Create or Add an email address and agree to the terms and conditions (no one reads them anyway).

Select your provider if it's listed, or just choose "other" if it's not there, enter your email address and password, then click Continue. You should now see a confirmation screen asking if you're happy with the setting, which of course you are, so click Continue and you'll receive a message confirming that your email address has been set up.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to BlackBerry set up and optimisation. For more BlackBerry tips, tricks, apps and advice, check out Geek Squad who are always talking about the latest BlackBerry bits and bobs on their blog.
